Carabao ad Cattle Hoist a Minimal Increase in Production

Increasing trend in the trading of Carabao and Cattle as demand escalates

Manifestation of maintaining the market for livestock was seen over the year 2018 as the production of carabao and cattle posted a minimal increase of 5.18 and 3.14 percent respectively against that of 2017. These are all attributed to the escalating demand of live animals from Cebu, Manila, Negros Occidental and other neighbouring provinces. It had been a rewarding year for livestock growers especially in backyard farms which dominates most of the supply as the live weight price of these animals also gained momentum due to the increasing demand.

Carabao production in 2018 was at 2,824 metric tons compared to that of 2017 which was at 2,685 metric tons. Meanwhile, cattle production registered at 6,005 metric tons in 2018 as compared to the 2017 production of 5,822 metric tons.

Production of Hog dwindles while Goat escalated and posted positive growth

Hog showed a slight decline as exhibited by the production of only 40,271 metric tons in 2018 as compared to 40,886 metric tons in 2017 or a 1.50 percent decrease as the supply from both commercial and backyard farms deteriorated. It is somewhat a calling for hog growers to engage more in raising hogs especially in backyard farms which controls most of the supply due to insistent demand of live hogs from neighbouring provinces. The live weight buying price per kilo of hog also catapulted  due to increasing demand.

Goat production also showed a positive growth of 4.50 percent from  3,047 metric tons in 2017 to 3,184 metric tons in 2018. This was attributed to the strong market demand of live animals from Cebu, Negros Occidental and Manila.

More trading of Chicken while Duck is slowly ascending

Chicken posted an upward trend in 2018 which was at 16,104 metric tons compared to 14,414 metric tons in 2017 or an 11.72 percent increase which was attributed to more supply of day-old-chicks for broilers at loading period and more disposal in backyard farms to sustain demand from other provinces.

Duck production also improved slightly in 2018 which tallied at 203 metric tons compared to that of 2017 which was at 186 metric tons or a 9.14 percent increase due to demand from Negros Occidental.
