Negros Oriental February 2020 Farm Prices

 

Lower farm gate prices for Palay fresh versus February 2019

     Comparing the average farm gate price of Palay fresh, this February 2020 with the same month in 2019, shrunken price level was noticed in the Farm Price Survey (FPS) operated while that of Corn grain white, a growing trend was noted.

     Palay fresh other variety lowered by Php3.40 per kilo compared to the same month in 2019. Lower buying price offered by local traders in the province due to sufficient supply of imported commercial rice.

     February 2020 Farm prices Survey result generated a progressive price movement for Robusta dry beans, Abaca dried fiber and Copra fresh due to increasing demand from processors. Coffee Robusta posted the biggest average farm gate price surge of Php14.06 per kilo above its price level in February 2019. Abaca dried fiber capped Php3.79 per kilo over last years’ price of Php50.55 while Copra fresh increased its average farm gate price Php3.36 per kilo this year to snag a 56 per cent increase in its average farm gate price for the month.

     Meanwhile, 57 per cent of the selected NFICC commodities advanced negatively. Sinking its average farm gate price ranging from 21.71 per cent high of Coconut mature to a lower magnitude of 1.39 per cent reduction of Sugarcane for raw sugar. Coffee Arabica lost Php7.56 per kilo from its average farm gate price of Php94.69 last February 2019. While Coconut young decreased 2.35 per cent of its price in February 2019 sliding to Php6.22 per kilo this year.

 

  

 

 

 

Selected Fruit vegetables farm gate price weakened

     Average farm gate prices of most of selected fruit vegetables monitored this February 2020 deteriorated compared with the average farm gate price recorded in February 2019. Weak demand of these commodities leads to the reduced average farm gate price. Adequate supply against fading demand also play a role to the negative trend. Ampalaya again for the second month secured the biggest average price loss of Php8.26 per kilo equivalent to 16.98 per cent decline. Least reduction of 2.10 per cent was logged by Tomato losing only 51 centavos of its last years’ price of Php15.18 per kilo.

     Cucumber recorded the second highest percentage improvement of 16.67 per cent rise in average farmgate price over the February 2019 price level. String beans added 40 centavos for every kilo above its average farm gate price in 2019 posting the least price increment of 1.19 per cent. Upo (Gourd) increased its price Php2.96 per kilo reaching Php17.44 per kilo average farm gate price this February 2020.

     Majority of selected temperate vegetables farm gate price soar

     Strong demand from outside province drove the average farm gate price of majority of Cruciferous vegetables. Pechay native put up the highest price expansion of 107.29 per cent, shooting up from Php16.63 per kilo same month last year to Php32.13 per kilo this year. Cabbage posted the second highest price increment of Php6.66 per kilo this month from the Php13.13 per kilo level in February 2019. Cauliflower improved 20.79 per cent to settle on Php82.04 per kilo from last years’ average farm gate price of Php67.92per kilo. Lettuce forge ahead 47.79 per cent from Php29.21 same month last year to Php43.17 per kilo.

    Pechay Baguio regressed 15.33 per cent from last February 2019 farm gate price of Php13.31 to Php11.27 per kilo same month this year due to inflow from outside province and higher production during the period.

Banana farm gate price advance for the second consecutive month

            Banana prices reported this February 2020 continued to progress compared to the same month in 2019. Associating this months’ average farm gate price with that recorded in February 2019, Cavendish prices improved 52.25 per cent which is the highest improvement among all varieties. Lacatan variety upgraded its farm gate prices Php11.24 per kilo over its previous years’ price of Php26.08 per kilo.

Saba price increased 34.38 per cent due to strong demand from outside province. While Bungulan and Latundan also registered 18.73 and 17.67per cent price improvement respectively from below ten-peso price level last February 2019. Higher demand from outside province and less inflow from outside province triggered the higher pricing this month.

    Lower average farm gate price for Pineapple Hawaiian and Calamansi was also noted due to inflow from outside province adding to the local production. Pineapple Hawaiian dropped Php2.17 per kilo from its February 2019 price level of Php20.23 because of inflow of same commodities from Negros Occidental and increasing local production. Calamansi also drained Php2.24 per kilo average farm gate price. Inflow from Mindanao affected the price trend.   Mango Carabao variety surged Php31.42 per kilo due to demand over its average farm gate price last February 2019 of Php67.95 an increase of 46.24 per cent.

Major root crops farmgate price weakened

            While more than 71 per cent of selected root crops monitored in the provincial market basket of the Farm Prices Survey put up a swelling farm gate price trend for the month of February 2020 as compared with the same month in 2019, major root crops like Camote and Cassava fresh tubers projected a diminishing price trend.

            Higher demand brought the snowballing rise of farm gate prices of Ginger Hawaiian, Carrots and Gabi Cebu. Ginger put up the highest price upsurge of Php15.84 per kilo to close down to its current average farm gate price of Php46.68 per kilo from that of last years’ Php30.84 per kilo, an increase of 51.36 per cent. Carrots improved Php12.73 per kilo from that of last years’ February price. Least price improvement was that of Radish with only Php1.29 per kilo increase in average farm gate price this year to close at Php20.26 per kilo.

    Sufficient production of Camote and Cassava tubers against declining demand pushed down its average farm gate price to 4.98 and 13.58 per cent respectively. Camote tuber lost 0.48 centavos per kilo from its price level in February 2019 while Cassava fresh tuber for food lost Php1.21 per kilo.

 

    

 

All other selected commodities farm gate price surged

            Except for Peanut with shell dry that shrink its average farm gate price to Php36.95 from Php40.49 per kilo last February 2019, all other selected commodities registered a resurging trend. Less demand for peanut with shell dry from outside province caused the shrinking of its price by 8.74 per cent.

     Finger pepper and Onion leaves top the commodities with the first and the second highest price increase respectively at 49.83 and 48.90 per cent jump from its February 2019 price level. Kangkong leaves average farm gate price gained 2 per cent during the period the least increment of the group. Bell pepper came in second least price improvement at only 8.82 per cent while Peanut with shell fresh gained 19.59 per cent. Demand for these commodities against decreasing production caused the progressing price trend.

Lower average farm gate price for livestock except cattle for slaughter

 

      Sustaining for the second consecutive month, majority of the four-legged livestock and native chicken for slaughter recorded a declining price movement compared to the same month in 2019 due to weaker demand from outside the province. Lesser demand from Manila, Cebu and Leyte for carabao, hog and goat for slaughter slumped its farm gate price ranging from as low as 3.75 per cent for Goat and as high as 16.42 per cent for Hog. Carabao also slashed down to Php72.58 per kilo this February 2020 from Php77.31 per kilo last year same month.

     Cattle for slaughter recorded slight improvement in average price for the period compared to same month in February 2019. A 6.72 per cent price increment equivalent to Php1.95 per kilo add on was noted over its previous years’ price of Php106.07 per kilo. Brought by less disposal from raisers in the province traders from outside province jacked up its buying price over the period.
