Consumer Price Index for All Income Households

in Negros Oriental: February 2020

 

PRICE SITUATION: Year-on-Year

Inflation rate pins at 1.6 percent

    Inflation Rate (IR) is the rate of change of the CPI expressed in percent. The IR of the province in February 2020 was 1.6 percent, 2.3 percent lower than the same period last year of 3.9 percent. This month’s inflation rate has declined by 0.2 percent from 1.8 percent in January 2020. Additionally, the Purchasing Power of the Peso (PPP) in the province decreased from 0.84 last year to a record of 0.82 during the first two months of this year.

    On a 12-month record, the month of February 2019 had the highest inflation rate of 3.9. Since then, inflation rate gradually decreased each month hitting at the lowest rate of -0.8 during the months of September and October before rising again in November.

    On a year on year comparison, the price situation in all items increased by 1.6 price index. All Commodity groups except under Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages and Communication reflected the increase indices compared last year.

    Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (213.1) recorded the highest percent change of 32.2 percent. Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Maintenance of the House (131.2); Education (149.7); and Transport (106.0) also recorded a high percent change of 11.8 percent, 5.6 percent and 5.2 percent, respectively. 

    Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and other Fuels (128.2); Health (122.7), and Clothing and Footwear (110.6) also showed an increase of 3.4 percent, 1.7 percent and 1.3 percent, correspondingly.

    Both Restaurant and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (107.7) and Recreation and Culture (107.0) have a price index of less than 1 percent while Communication remains stable. Only Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (121.8) declined by 1.1 percent.

PRICE SITUATION: Month-on-Month

Inflation rate slows down at 0.74 percent

     Compared with last month, price indices decreased in Transport (107.8 to 106.0), Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (123.5 to 121.8); and Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (128.7 to 128.2) commodity groups to 1.67 percent, 1.38 percent, and 0.39 percent, respectively.

    On the other hand, commodity groups with corresponding increases in the price index are the following:  Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Maintenance of the House (127.2 to 131.2) at 3.14 percent; Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (209.0 to 213.1) at 1.96 percent; Clothing and Footwear (110.3 to 110.6) at 0.27 percent; and Restaurant and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (107.6 to 107.7) at 0.09 percent.

    Meanwhile, four commodity groups remain stable compared with the previous month’s price indices. These were the following: Health (122.7), Communication (100.4), Recreation and Culture (107.0), and Education (149.7).

    In February 2020, commodities under Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco had the highest CPI at 213.1.  This was followed by the commodity group Education (149.7); Furnishings Household Equipment and Routine Maintenance of the House (131.2); Housing, Electricity, Gas and other Fuels (128.2); Health (122.7); and Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (121.8). The rest of the commodity groups have a CPI lower than the provincial average (121.4).
