Marriages in the Philippines dropped by 11 percent from 2007-2017

During a span of a decade, the total number of registered marriages in the Philippines dropped by 11 percent, that is from 490,054 in 2007 to 434,932 in 2017. The decrease is visible across regions except Central Visayas and ARMM showing an increase in the number during the 10-year period.

In 2017, CALABARZON had the most number of recorded marriages with 58,152, higher than the National Capital region with 55,570. Region III ranks third with 51,027. The lowest is spotted in ARMM but it has the largest percent increase within the period of about 48 percent, from 1,474 in 2007 to 2,177 in 2017.

Almost sixty percent of marriages are solemnized through religious ceremonies

Over fifty-nine percent of marriages were solemnized through religious ceremonies which include those officiated by priest, Imams, and tribal leaders, among others in 2017. The remaining forty percent was performed by means of civil rites.

R7 records the lowest number of marriages in 2013 for the period 2007-2017

Central Visayas recorded an increase in the number of registered marriages from 36,235 in 2007 to 36,776 in 2017 which translates to a growth rate of 1.49 percent. The highest amongst was recorded in 2017 while the lowest was noted in 2013 with around 33 thousand marriages. The figure in 2017 accounts to about eight percent of the country’s total marriage in 2017.

Total marriages in CV grows by 1.49 percent from 2007 to 2017

The percent change of marriages in Central Visayas from 2016 to 2017 increased by 7.56 percent while a 7.69 percent decrease was recorded from 2012 to 2013.

Marriageable age group in Central Visayas in 2017 is 25-29 years old

Thirty-eight percent of grooms and 37 percent of brides in Central Visayas in 2017 opted to marry at the age of 25-29 years old. More female marries at an early age than the males. And, it is interesting to note that a number of men aged 65 and over still get married while no bride aged 65 years old and over was recorded.

Marriages in Bohol in 2017 accounts to 7,046

Total number of registered marriages in Bohol increased from 6,531 in 2007 to 7,046 in 2017, which translates to a growth rate of 7.89 percent. The highest amongst was recorded in 2012 with a total of 7,094 while the lowest was recorded in 2013 with 6,023. The figure in 2017 accounts to about 19 percent of the region’s total registered marriages in 2017.

Cebu records two percent increase in the number of marriages from 2007-2017

Cebu logged an increase in the number of registered marriages from 21,202 in 2007 to 21,627 in 2017 which translates to a growth rate of two percent. The highest amongst was recorded in 2017 while the lowest was observed in 2011 with 19,291 marriages. The figure in 2017 accounts to around 59 percent of the region’s total registered marriages in 2017. It shall be noted also that among the four provinces in Central Visayas, Cebu topped the most number of registered marriages.

Marriages in Negros Oriental decrease by 3.21 percent from 2007 to 2017

Negros Oriental observed a decrease in the number of registered marriages from 7,967 in 2007 to 7,046 in 2017 which translates to a percent change of 3.21. It has been observed that the highest number of recorded marriages was in 2011 with 8,468 marriages while the lowest was noted in 2013 with 7,042 marriages registered. The figure in 2017 accounts to about 21 percent of the region’s total registered marriages in 2017.

Siquijor totals 392 marriages in 2017

Total number of marriages in the province of Siquijor dropped by 26.73 percent from 535 in 2007 to 392 in 2017. The province also had the lowest number of marriages among the four provinces in Central Visayas. The figure in 2017 accounts to one percent of the region’s total registered marriages in 2017.

Data on marriages presented here were obtained from the Certificates of Marriage (Municipal Form No. 97) that were registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars all throughout the country and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority.

Marriages involving a Filipino which occurred abroad are not included.
