Central Visayas lodged more than one thousand infant deaths and almost two hundred  maternal deaths were registered in the year 2020

At national level, 16,885 infant deaths and 1,975 maternal deaths were registered which contributed to  about 2.8 percent and 0.3 percent of the total registered deaths in the Philippines, respectively. Across the regions, Region IV – (CALABARZON) ranked first for both maternal and infant deaths by Usual Residence. Meanwhile, Central Visayas ranked fourth and third with 1,376 and 199 in terms of highest number of registered infant and maternal deaths. (See Figure 1)

 

Proportion of Infant deaths to the total deaths by province/HUCs

Among provinces of Central Visayas, Cebu had the highest proportion of infant deaths that occurred with 583 or 2.9 percent shares of the total number of  deaths in the province, followed by Bohol with 208 or 2.4 percent and Negros Oriental with 197 or 2.4 percent contribution of the total deaths occurrence. The province with least number of infant deaths was Siquijor with only 19, this accounts to 2.3 percent of the total deaths in the province which can be an indicative of less population. On the other hand, for highly urbanized cities, the City of Cebu had the highest infant deaths by Usual Residence with 206 or 2.6 percent from the total number of  deaths compared to the City of Lapu-lapu with 88 or 3.5 percent and City of Mandaue with 75 or 3.4 percent.  (See Figure 2)

 

Region VII polls more male infant deaths occurrence in 2020

Of the total infant deaths occurred in Central Visayas year 2020, 808 or 59.0 percent of which were male infants while 568 or 41.0 percent were female infants. Comparably, the Infant deaths occurrence only contributed to 2.7 percent of the total deaths occured in the region. (See Figure 3 and 4)

 

Infant Deaths by month of occurrence

By occurrence, the highest number of registered infant deaths was recorded in the month of January with 165 or 12.0 percent of the total registered infant deaths in the region while the month of April recorded the lowest number of infant deaths with 72 or 5.2 percent. (See Figure 5)

 

Infant Deaths by Attendant in Central Visayas, 2020

In Central Visayas year 2020, 73.0 percent of the registered infant deaths were attended. 50 percent or 693 infant deaths were attended by the hospital authorities,15 percent or 200 infant deaths were attended by a private physician and 7 percent or 100 infant deaths were attended by a public health officer. (See Figure 5)

 

Central Visayas reported about 200 hundred registered maternal deaths in 2020

Central Visayas has recorded a total of 199 registered maternal deaths in the year 2020. This contributed to 10.1 percent of the 1,975 total number of registered maternal deaths in the country. The highest number of maternal deaths was recorded in the age group of  35-39 with 43 or 21.6 percent of the total registered maternal deaths occurred in the region. (See Figure 6)

 

Technical Notes:

Vital statistics » are derived from information obtained at the time when the occurrences of vital events and their characteristics are inscribed in a civil register. Vital acts and events are the births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages, and all such events that have something to do with an individual's entrance and departure from life together with the changes in civil status that may occur to a person during his lifetime.

Death » refers to the permanent disappearance of all evidence of life at any time after live birth has taken place.

Infant Death» is a deaths that occurred before reaching age 1.

Maternal Death » is the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management but not from accidental or incidental causes.

Place of Occurrence» refers to the place where the vital event took place.

Usual Residence» refers to the place where the person habitually or permanently resides.
