The total carabao production of Central Visayas from July to September 2022 was estimated at 2.06 thousand metric tons, liveweight. This was 20.5 percent higher than the previous year’s same quarter production of 1.71 thousand metric tons. It increased annually at a slower rate of 20.5 percent from the 39.3 percent growth rate in 2021. (Figure 1 & 2 and Table 1)

 

Among all regions, Central Visayas ranked the 6th producer of carabao during the quarter. Western Visayas accounted the highest production with 4.14 thousand metric tons, liveweight followed by Northern Mindanao with 3.31 thousand metric tons, liveweight. Completing the top five major producing regions were Davao Region, Eastern Visayas and SOCCSKARGEN with 2.68 thousand metric tons, liveweight, 2.67 thousand metric tons, liveweight and 2.39 thousand metric tons, liveweight, respectively. Meanwhile, CAR and Caraga regions accounted the lowest production of 0.52 and 0.50 thousand metric tons, liveweight, this quarter, respectively. CAR shared 1.67 percent while Caraga share 1.63 percent of the country’s total production. (Figure 1, 3 and Table 1)

 

In terms of percent share, Western Visayas was the major contributor with 13.40 percent share to the country’s total carabao production. The region’s percent share was 6.65 percent. Meanwhile, Caraga shared the lowest with 1.63 percent. (Figure 3 and Table 1)

 

Relative to their levels in the same quarter of 2021, there were 12 regions reported increments in production during the quarter. Northern Mindanao posted the highest increase of 0.52 thousand metric tons, liveweight, from 2.79 thousand metric tons, liveweight in the same quarter of the previous year to 3.31 thousand metric tons, liveweight this third quarter of 2022. (Table 1)

 

Total carabao inventory of Central Visayas as of 30 September 2022 was estimated at 223,043 heads. This ranked the region in the 4th place next with Central Luzon with 240, 706 heads. Among regions, Bicol accounted the highest inventory followed by Western Visayas with 321, 273 heads and 270, 384 heads, respectively. (Figure 3)

 

These top three regions comprised a 30.0 percent share of the country’s total inventory. Central Visayas shared an 8.0 percent of the country’s total inventory. (Figure 3 and Table 2)

Of the region’s total carabao inventory, smallhold farms registered for 99.95 percent, while the remaining comprised the semi- commercial farms with 0.05 percent. (Figure 4)
