The total hog production of Central Visayas from July to September 2022 was estimated at 58.08 thousand metric tons, liveweight. This was 16.8 percent higher than the previous year’s same quarter production of 49.72 thousand metric tons. It increased annually from 10.1 percent in 2021 to 16.8 percent growth rate in 2022.(Fig. 1 & Fig. 2 and Table 1)

 

 

Among the regions, Central Visayas was the top producer of hogs during the quarter. This was followed by Northern Mindanao and CALABARZON with 54.29 and 52.79 thousand metric tons, liveweight, respectively. These three regions accounted for 37.8 percent of the country’s total hog production. Meanwhile, NCR accounted with the lowest hog production at 0.02 thousand metric tons, liveweight. (Figure 1 and Table 1)

 

In terms of production, the region’s percent share was the biggest among all regions at 13.3 percent to the country’s total swine production. Among the major producing regions were Northern Mindanao with 12.4 percent share, CALABARZON with 12.1 percent share and Western Visayas with 12.0 percent share. (Figure 3 and Table 1)

On the other hand, the bottom four regions in terms of percent shares were Cagayan Valley, Caraga, BARMM and NCR with 1.9 percent, 1.3 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively. (Fig.3 and Table 1)

 

Relative to their levels in the same quarter of 2021, nine regions posted increments in production during the quarter. In terms of level, Central Visayas posted the highest increase of 8.35 thousand metric tons, liveweight from 49.72 thousand metric tons, liveweight in the same quarter of the previous year to 58.08 thousand metric tons, liveweight this third quarter of 2022. (Table 1)

 

As of 30 September 2022, the region’s total swine inventory was estimated at 1,144,454 heads. The region was among the top three regions recorded with highest swine population. CALABARZON accounted the highest with 1,187,158 heads, followed by Western Visayas with 1,167,508 heads. These three regions comprised 34.8 percent share of the country’s total swine population. (Figure 4 and Table 2)

 

Of the region’s total swine inventory, smallhold farms accounted for 65.99 percent, while the remaining comprised the semi-commercial farms and commercial farms with corresponding shares of 0.41 percent and 33.60 percent, respectively. (Figure 5)
