This year’s theme for the celebration of the 124th Philippine Independence Day is “Kalayaan 2022: Towards a Free, United and Safe Nation”. The celebration was spearheaded by Municipal Mayor Hon. Richard C. Quezon and attended by various national and local line government agencies.

The activity started with a thanksgiving mass celebration held at the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Church, followed by the honoring of the Philippine Flag by singing of the Philippine national anthem and the raising of the Philippine flag at the municipal building flag pole. The Philippine flag was raised by the men in uniform from the Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), and Bureau of Fire Protection (PNP). A floral offering by heads and leaders of different government agencies was also made in front of the Philippine flag.

In line with the celebration, the municipality of Siquijor inaugurated its newly renovated Rizal Monument which showcases Dr. Jose P. Rizal monument and a mini museum which includes historical structures, past and present government officials of the municipality and a tourism site for everyone to see.

A commemoration will not be complete without showcasing the historical dances and songs that shape the Philippines. A special number presented by millennial Siquijor dance group, Siquijor harmonic choir, Dept. of Health dance crew, and the women and personnel in the provincial health office was presented.

As the commemoration ended, a message from Vice Governor Mei Ling Quezon-Brown enlighten everyone of what true independence means. She mentioned that in our generation, true independence doesn’t only mean independence from captivity but rather independence from poverty, from oppression and even from anxiety. She also reiterated the theme for the celebration and encourages everyone that true independence for a nation means united and safe.
To end the event, the municipality of Siquijor prepared a simple filipino feast/snacks featuring native filipino delicacies for everyone to enjoy.
