Siquijor Provincial Statistical Office – In a bid to enhance economic planning and development in the province through data sharing and towards the estimation of the Provincial Product Accounts and harmonization of LGU’s business registration with PSA’s list of establishment, PSA Siquijor recently conducted a comprehensive training program aimed at fostering the adoption of the Philippine Standard Industrial Classification (PSIC) among Local Government Units (LGUs). The training, held from July 27 to July 28, 2023 at the Conference Room of PSA Siquijor, saw active participation from all the municipalities of Siquijor province.
The PSIC is a vital statistical standard tool developed by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) that systematically classifies industries according to their economic activities. It serves as a standardized reference for organizing and analyzing data related to the country’s economic sectors. The adoption of PSIC by the LGUs is expected to streamline data collection processes, improve economic analysis, and facilitate more effective policy-making at the local level.
The two-day training, organized in collaboration with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Siquijor Field Office, featured workshops and lectures aimed at familiarizing participants with the PSIC framework and its incorporation in the Integrated Business Permits and Licensing System (iBPLS), its application, and its significance in the context of local governance. Attendees also received instructions on how to apply PSIC codes to various economic activities within their respective jurisdictions.
Usec. Claire Dennis S. Mapa, National Statistician and Civil Registrar General, expressed his enthusiasm during his message (recorded) for the potential benefits of adopting the PSIC. He stated, “With this activity, PSA is looking forward to the compilation of timely, comparable, and relevant statistics which are necessary for the government’s economic planning and program development which will eventually yield benefits to our countrymen. The adoption of the updated PSIC at the local level is an opportunity for the PSA and the LGUs to engage and strengthen partnership towards generation and data sharing of quality industrial statistics.”
As the training concluded, the LGUs in Siquijor expressed their commitment to implementing the PSIC classification system in their respective jurisdictions. They pledged to integrate the knowledge gained during the training into their planning processes and to work collaboratively towards a more data-driven and economically vibrant province.
With the successful conclusion of this initiative, Siquijor sets an inspiring example for other provinces and regions in the country, highlighting the importance of adopting standardized tools such as PSIC to promote sustainable economic development and evidence-based policy formulation at the local level.
