Registered Marriages in Central Visayas in 2020 declined by almost half from 2019

In the year 2020, the registered marriage in the Philippines reached to 240,775 which was around 55.7 percent to the total 431,972 marriages occurrence in the year 2019. This showed that the number of marriages in 2020 decreased by 44.3 percent from 2019.  Meanwhile, Central Visayas reported marriages in 2020 reached only to 18,882 or 52.6 percent to the 35,924 registered marriages in 2019. This means that the number of registered marriages in 2020 in the region declined by 47.4 percent compared with the number of registered marriages in 2019. (See Figure 1 and Figure 2.)

 

Central Visayas ranked 5th with the highest number of registered marriages

Central Visayas lodged almost 19 thousand registered marriages with 7.8 percent share to the overall registered marriages in the Philippines for the year 2020. Region IVA-CALABARZON ranked first with 32,822 or 13.6 percent share and ARRM had the lowest number of reported marriages occurrences with only 1,635 or 0.7 percent share. (See Figure 3.)

 

January marked the highest marriage occurrences

During the year 2020, Month of January had the highest number of reported marriages occurrence or 18.4 percent of the total registered marriages in the Central Visayas. It was followed by February with 3, 077 marriages or 16.3 percent share. On the other hand, month of April had the least marriages occurrence with only 81 registered marriages or 0.4 percent share. (See Figure 4.)

 

Most marriages occurred in Cebu Province

In Central Visayas, Cebu Province had the highest number of marriages with 6,919 occurrence comprising the 37 percent of the region’s total registered in the year 2020, followed by Negros Oriental with 5,040 or 27 percent and Bohol with 3,709 or 19 percent share. Meanwhile, Siquijor got the lowest with only 161 or 1 percent share across the region. On the other hand, among the three Highly Urbanized Cities, Cebu City had the highest percent contribution with 1,583 marriages or 8 percent share. (See Figure 5.)

 

More than 97 Percent of marriages in Central Visayas were registered on time

Central Visayas had an average of 97.8 percent of its marriages registered within the reglementary period. Among the provinces in the region excluding HUCs, Negros Oriental had the highest percentage of late registered marriages with 2.8 percent share. Meanwhile, Siquijor reported 100 percent timely registered marriages. Moreover, among the three HUCs, City of Mandaue, had the highest percent of late registered marriages which was 5.2. (See Figure 6.)

 

Majority who got married were at the age group of 25-29

In 2020, based on registered marriages, majority of those who got married in Central Visayas were in age-group 25-29. For males about 39.5 percent were in such age- group while females had a share of 40.9 percent. Meanwhile, the number of females (885) who got married at the age below 20 years old were more than 5 times of those males (149) of the same age group. The number of males who got married at the age of 60 and above was 282 which is more than 3 times that of females (71) of same age group.  Additionally, higher number of males than of females got married at 30 and above. (See Figure 7.)

 

Explanatory Note

Data on marriages presented in this release were obtained from the timely and late registered marriages at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars throughout the country and submitted to the Office of the Civil Registrar General through the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-Provincial Statistical Offices (PSOs). Information presented includes marriages that occurred from January to December 2020 (cut-off date is as of 16 July 2021 on the submission of encoded data files to the PSA-Central Office from PSOs). Figures presented herein are not adjusted for under registration. Marriages of Filipinos abroad which were reported to the Philippine Foreign Service Posts are presented in a separate report.

Vital statistics » are derived from information obtained at the time when the occurrences of vital events and their characteristics are inscribed in a civil register. Vital acts and events are the births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages, and all such events that have something to do with an individual's entrance and departure from life together with the changes in civil status that may occur to a person during his lifetime.

Marriage » is a special contract of permanent union between a man and a woman entered into in accordance with law for the establishment of conjugal and family life.

Place of Occurrence » refers to the place where the vital event took place.
