Siquijor Fisheries Statistics in 1st Quarter 2022

Municipal Fisheries Production in Siquijor down to 637.69 Metric Tons

The municipal fisheries sector has a total volume of production of 637.69 metric tons during the first quarter of 2022. Production for the first quarter of 2022 was 27.77 percent lower than the first quarter of previous year’s production of 882.88 metric tons.

All sectors posted a decline in production except Aquaculture which was 131.52 percent higher, or from 1.23 metrics tons in the first quarter of 2021 to 2.84 metrics tons in the same quarter of 2022. (Table 1)

Fisheries in Siquijor consist of two (2) subsectors, namely: Municipal Fisheries and Aquaculture Fisheries.

For the first quarter of 2022, the following are the percentage distribution of the fisheries subsectors to the total volume of fisheries production in the province:

• Marine Municipal Fisheries accounted for 99.56 percent share and

• Aquaculture has a 0.44 percent contribution (Figure 1)

Estimated Total Value of Fisheries in Siquijor dropped by 25.96 percent in the first quarter of 2022

The estimated value of municipal fisheries registered a decrease of 26.32 percent in 2022 compared to the same quarter in 2021, or an estimated value of PhP 111 million in 2021 to PhP 81.78 million in 2022.

Aquaculture recorded the highest increase with 674.86 percent among the sector of fisheries in Siquijor, from Php 58.48 thousand in the first quarter of 2021 to PhP 453.14 thousand in the same quarter of 2022. (Table 2)

Municipal Fisheries

The municipal fisheries during the first quarter of 2022 recorded at 637.69 metric tons, a declined by 27.77 percent over the previous year first quarter production of 882.88 metric tons.

One hundred percent of the total municipal volume of production came from the marine municipal fisheries since there was no inland municipal fisheries subsector in the province. (Figure 2)

Aquaculture

Marine pen production contributed the greatest among subsector of aquaculture with 2.33 metric tons in the first quarter of 2022.

On the other hand, no production in brackishwater fishpond was observed for the first quarter of 2022. Freshwater fishpond recorded a decreased of 52.50 percent over the same quarter of previous year, or from 0.13 metric tons of first quarter of 2021 to 0.06 metric tons in 2022. For seaweed, production reached 0.99 metric tons in first quarter of 2022 which was lowered by 52.79 percent compared to same quarter of 2021 with a production of 0.45 metric tons. (Table 3)

Estimated Total Value of Aquaculture in Siquijor rose by 674.86 percent in the first quarter of 2022

Marine pen registered the highest increase in percentage with 3,372.98 among the subsector of aquaculture in Siquijor, from Php 12.10 thousand in the first quarter of 2021 to PhP 420.23 thousand in the same quarter of 2022. Meanwhile, Freshwater fishpond and seaweed decreased by 46.20 and 19.24, respectively. (Table 4)

Concepts and Definitions

Aquaculture – fishery operation involving all forms of raising and culturing of fish and other fishery species in marine, brackish and freshwater environments. Examples are fishponds, fish pens, fish cages, mussels, oysters, seaweed farms, and hatcheries.

Commercial Fishing – the catching of fish with the use of fishing boats with a capacity of more than three (3) gross tons for trade, business, or profit beyond subsistence or sports fishing.

Municipal Fishing – covers fishing operations conducted with or without the use of a boat weighing three (3) gross tons or less.

Marine – seawater outside the coastal line such as Manila Bay, Visayan Sea, etc.

Inland Municipal Fishing – the catching of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and all other aquatic animals and plants in inland water like lakes, rivers, dams, marshes, etc. using simple gears and fishing boats some of which are non-motorized with a capacity of three (3) gross tons or less; or fishing not requiring the use of fishing boats.

Aquafarm – the farming facilities used in the culture or propagation of aquatic species including fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and aquatic plants for purposes of rearing to enhance production.
