Fisheries Production in Siquijor goes up to 1,244.02 Metric Tons
The total volume of production in Siquijor went up to 1,244.02 metric tons during the second quarter of 2022. This was 0.97 percent higher than its record in the same quarter of 2021 with 1,232.02 metric tons. (Figure 1)
The municipal fisheries sector posted a total volume of production of 1,239.30 metric tons during the second quarter of 2022. This was 1.07 percent higher than the second quarter of the previous year’s second quarter of 2022 production of 1,226.18 metric tons.
All sectors posted an increase in production except aquaculture which was 19.30 percent lower, or from 5.84 metric tons in the second quarter of 2021 to 4.71 metric tons in the same quarter of 2022. (Table 1)
Fisheries in Siquijor consist of two (2) subsectors, namely: Municipal Fisheries and Aquaculture Fisheries.
For the second quarter of 2022, the following were the percentage distribution of the fisheries subsectors to the total volume of fisheries production in the province:
• Marine Municipal Fisheries accounted for 99.62 percent share and
• Aquaculture has a 0.38 percent contribution (Figure 2)
Estimated Total Value of Fisheries in Siquijor rose by 28.92 percent in the 2nd quarter of 2022
The estimated value of municipal fisheries registered an increase of 29.25 percent in 2022 compared to the same quarter in 2021, or an estimated value of PhP 160 million in 2021 to PhP 207 million in 2022. Aquaculture recorded the lowest with 27.12 percent among the sector of fisheries in Siquijor, from Php 942 thousand in the second quarter of 2021 to PhP 687 thousand in the same quarter of 2022. (Table 2)
Municipal Fisheries
The municipal fisheries during the second quarter of 2022 were recorded at 1,239.30 metric tons, an inclined by 1.07 percent over the previous year’s second-quarter production of 1,226.18 metric tons.
One hundred percent of the total municipal volume of production came from the marine municipal fisheries since there was no production in the inland municipal fisheries subsector in the province. (Figure 3)
Aquaculture
Marine pen production contributed the greatest among the subsector of aquaculture with 3.05 metric tons in the second quarter of 2022.
On the other hand, no production in Marine cage was observed for the 2nd quarter of 2022. Brackishwater fishpond recorded a decrease of 36.44 percent over the same quarter of the previous year, or from 0.35 metric tons in the second quarter of 2021 to 0.23 metric tons in 2022. Freshwater fishpond production reached 0.19 metric tons in the second quarter of 2022 which was higher by 80.37 percent compared to the same quarter of 2021 with a production of 0.19 metric tons. For the Marine pen, production posted a decrease of 34.65 percent, or from 4.67 metric tons in the second quarter of 2021 to 3.05 metric tons in the same quarter of 2022. Meanwhile, seaweed production increased by 74.30 percent in the second quarter of 2022 with 1.24 metric tons compared to 0.71 metric tons in the same quarter of 2021. (Figure 4)
The estimated Total Value of Aquaculture in Siquijor dropped by 27.12 percent in the second quarter of 2022.
Freshwater fishpond registered the highest increase with 101.45 percent in the second quarter of 2022, or from PhP 14.45 thousand to PhP 29.11 thousand in the same quarter of 2021. Seaweed also posted an increase of Php 74.46 thousand in the second quarter of 2022, this is 81.34 percent higher compared to PhP 41.06 thousand on the same quarter in 2021.
Marine pen registered the highest increase in percentage with 3,372.98 among the subsector of aquaculture in Siquijor, from Php 12.10 thousand in the first quarter of 2021 to PhP 420.23 thousand in the same quarter of 2022. Meanwhile, Freshwater fishpond and seaweed decreased by 26.66 percent and 34.65 percent, respectively. (Figure 5)
Concepts and Definitions
Aquaculture – fishery operation involving all forms of raising and culturing of fish and other fishery species in marine, brackish and freshwater environments. Examples are fishponds, fish pens, fish cages, mussels, oysters, seaweed farms, and hatcheries.
Commercial Fishing – the catching of fish with the use of fishing boats with a capacity of more than three (3) gross tons for trade, business, or profit beyond subsistence or sports fishing.
Municipal Fishing – covers fishing operations conducted with or without the use of a boat weighing three (3) gross tons or less.
Marine – seawater outside the coastal line such as Manila Bay, Visayan Sea, etc.
Inland Municipal Fishing – the catching of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and all other aquatic animals and plants in inland water like lakes, rivers, dams, marshes, etc. using simple gears and fishing boats some of which are non-motorized with a capacity of three (3) gross tons or less; or fishing not requiring the use of fishing boats.
Aquafarm – the farming facilities used in the culture or propagation of aquatic species
including fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and aquatic plants for purposes of rearing to enhance production.
