The total volume of production in Siquijor went up to 541.26 metric tons during the third quarter of 2022. This was 0.97 percent higher than its record in the same quarter of 2021 with 538.49 metric tons. (Figure 1)

Fisheries in Siquijor consist of two (2) subsectors, namely: Municipal Fisheries and Aquaculture Fisheries.

For the third quarter of 2022, the following were the percentage distribution of the fisheries subsectors to the total volume of fisheries production in the province:

• Marine Municipal Fisheries accounted for 99.70 percent share and

• Aquaculture has a 0.30 percent contribution (Figure 2)

 

The estimated Total Value of Fisheries in Siquijor rose by 77.09 percent in the 3rd quarter of 2022.

The estimated value of municipal fisheries registered an increase by 78.84 percent in 2022 compared to the same quarter in 2021, or an estimated value of 62 million pesos in 2021 to 111 million pesos in 2022. Aquaculture recorded a 78.59 percent decrease in the sector of fisheries in Siquijor, from 699 thousand pesos in the third quarter of 2021 to 150 thousand pesos in the same quarter of 2022. Municipal Fisheries

Production of municipal fisheries during the third quarter of 2022 was recorded at 539.65 metric tons, an incline of 1.09 percent over the previous year’s third-quarter production of 533.85 metric tons.

One hundred percent of the total municipal volume of production came from the marine municipal fisheries since there was no production in the inland municipal fisheries subsector in the province. (Figure 3)

 

Aquaculture

Seaweed production increased by 12.66 percent, or from 1.00 metric tons in the third quarter of 2021 to 1.12 metric tons in the same quarter of 2022.

On the other hand, no production in Marine cage and Brackishwater fishpond was observed for the 3rd quarter of 2022. Freshwater fishpond production dropped by 21.25 percent or from 0.16 metric tons in the third quarter of 2022 to 0.13 metric tons in the same quarter of 2021. For the Marine pen, production posted a decrease of 88.95 percent, or from 3.23 metric tons in the third quarter of 2021 to 0.36 metric tons in the same quarter of 2022. (Figure 4)

 

The estimated Total Value of Aquaculture in Siquijor dropped by 78.59 percent in the third quarter of 2022.

Seaweed registered the highest increase with 13.27 percent in the third quarter of 2022, or from PhP 58.46 thousand in third quarter of 2021 to PhP 66.22 thousand in the same quarter of 2022. 

Meanwhile, Freshwater Fishpond posted a decrease of Php 4.78 thousand in the third quarter of 2022, this is 19.92 percent lower compared to PhP 24 thousand on the same quarter in 2021. Marine pen also registered a decrease of 88.95 percent, or from PhP 581.58 thousand in the third quarter of 2021 to PhP 64.26 in the same quarter of 2022.  (Figure 5)

Concepts and Definitions

Aquaculture – fishery operation involving all forms of raising and culturing of fish and other fishery species in marine, brackish and freshwater environments. Examples are fishponds, fish pens, fish cages, mussels, oysters, seaweed farms, and hatcheries.

Commercial Fishing – the catching of fish with the use of fishing boats with a capacity of more than three (3) gross tons for trade, business, or profit beyond subsistence or sports fishing.

Municipal Fishing – covers fishing operations conducted with or without the use of a boat weighing three (3) gross tons or less.

Marine – seawater outside the coastal line such as Manila Bay, Visayan Sea, etc.

Inland Municipal Fishing – the catching of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and all other aquatic animals and plants in inland water like lakes, rivers, dams, marshes, etc. using simple gears and fishing boats some of which are non-motorized with a capacity of three (3) gross tons or less; or fishing not requiring the use of fishing boats.

Aquafarm – the farming facilities used in the culture or propagation of aquatic species including fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and aquatic plants for purposes of rearing to enhance production.
