The total carabao production of Central Visayas from October to December 2021 was estimated at 1,785 metric tons, liveweight. This was 58.3 percent higher than the previous year’s same quarter production of 1,128 metric tons. (Figure 1 & 2 and Table 1)

Among all regions, Western Visayas accounted the highest production with 4,446 metric tons, liveweight followed by Eastern Visayas with 4,013 metric tons, liveweight. The other top producing regions were CALABARZON, 3,617 metric tons, Davao Region, 3,214 metric tons and BARMM, 3,100 metric tons. These five regions shared 49.5 percent to the country’s total carabao production. (Fig. 3 and Table 1)

Meanwhile, CAR accounted the lowest production of 362 metric tons, liveweight, this quarter. (Figure 3 and Table 1)

 

In terms of production, the region’s percent share was 4.8 percent to the country’s total carabao production. Meanwhile, Caraga Region shared the lowest with 1.0 percent. (Table 1)

 

As of 01 January 2022, Central Visayas total carabao inventory was estimated at 212,523 heads. This comprised of 211, 733 heads, 99.6 percent from Backyard farm and 790 head, 0.4 percent from Commercial farms. (Figure 4,5 and Table 2)

 

The region’s total inventory showed an increase of 2.7 percent from its level of 206,862 heads in the same period of 2021. (Figure 4 and Table 2)

This Carabao Situation Report presents the carabao industry in terms of volume of production and inventory by farm type. The report is prepared to serve as a ready reference for PSA’s various clients and stakeholders in the agriculture sector. It is released quarterly; that is, every February, May, August, and November.

Concepts and Definitions

Volume of production refers to the volume of locally-raised carabao disposed for slaughter including those which were shipped out to other regions/provinces for slaughter. This is expressed in metric tons, liveweight.

Inventory refers to the actual number of carabao present in the farm as of a specific reference date.
