Siquijor’s aquaculture production increases in 1st Quarter 2020

The aquaculture production in Siquijor was posted at 2.6942 metric tons in 1st Quarter 2020. This translates to an increase of 64.98 percent from the previous year’s 1st Quarter level of 1.6330 metric tons.

By ecosystem/Type, Marine Pen shared got the biggest portion of the total production with 0.9317 metric tons or equivalent to 35 percent share followed by Seaweed with 0.9795 metric tons at 36 percent share. Freshwater Fishpond ranked third with 0.4040 metric tons at 15 percent share, Marine Cage with 0.2600 metric tons at 10 percent share and Brackish water Fishpond with 0.1190 metric tons at 4 percent share.

The dominant species in aquaculture subsector of the province in 1st quarter 2020 was Milkfish. Milkfish production in 1st quarter 2020 registered a total of 1.3107 metric tons from Brackishwater Fishpond, Marine Pen and Marine Cage. This constitutes 49 percent of the total aquaculture production in the province. Meanwhile, harvesting of Seaweed from Marine got the 2nd portion with 36 percent share and harvested Tilapia from Freshwater Fishpond got the last slice which constitute 15 percent share.

TECHNICAL NOTES

Aquaculture - is a fishery operation involving all forms of raising and culturing of fish and other fishery species in fresh, brackish and marine water areas. The operation is comprised of activities from stocking to harvesting of species under controlled conditions in farming facility called aquafarm.

Aquaculture Production - refers to the volume harvested from the aquafarm. It includes those species harvested in marketable/matured size and in fresh form.

Landing Center - is a place where the fish catch and other aquatic products are unloaded and traded. Traditional landing center is a type of landing center where fishermen could unload their catch and/or dock their fishing boats without any obligation or payment for the use of the place.

Quarterly Aquaculture Survey - is a quarterly survey that generates estimates of volume and value of production per aquafarm type and species for the subsector.
