This special release presents the 2023 Livestock and Poultry Farmgate Prices in the Province of Cebu. The 2022 data were also included to analyze the changes and compare the province’s livestock and poultry farmgate prices. The information in this special release was obtained from www.openstat.psa.gov.ph.
A. Livestock and Poultry (Backyard): Farmgate Prices by commodity
1. Farmgate Prices of Livestock in Backyard Industry

In the backyard industry, the average farmgate price of Carabao for slaughter was recorded at PhP 132.01 per kilogram, liveweight in 2023. This indicates a significant decrease of 19.99 percent from PhP 165.00 per kilogram, liveweight farmgate price in 2022. In contrast, the farmgate price of Goat for slaughter had a notable increase of 20.04 percent from PhP 202.91 per kilogram, liveweight in 2022 to PhP 243.58 per kilogram, liveweight in 2023. Similarly, Hogs upgraded for slaughter decreased by 6.93 percent from PhP 170.44 per kilogram, liveweight in 2022 to PhP 158.62 per kilogram, liveweight in 2023. Meanwhile, the price Cattle for slaughter was noted at PhP 181.48 per kilogram, liveweight in 2023, which experienced a 6.88 percent decrease from PhP 194.88 per kilogram, liveweight in 2022. In terms of farmgate prices in the backyard industry in the poultry sector, Chicken broiler (other breed) showed the highest growth rate of 87.28 percent, from PhP 100.00 per kilogram, liveweight in 2022 to PhP 187.28 per kilogram, liveweight in 2023. This was followed by a significant increase of 19.08 percent in Chicken Fighting Cock, from PhP 1,602.92 per kilogram, liveweight in 2022 to PhP 1,908.80 per kilogram, liveweight in 2023. The farmgate price of Chicken Native/Improved was recorded at PhP 178.54 per kilogram, liveweight in 2023, with an increase of 9.49 percent from PhP 163.07 per kilogram, liveweight in 2022. In contrast, Chicken layer (culls) showed a decrease of 5.74 percent, from PhP 155.45 per kilogram, liveweight in 2022 to PhP 146.54 per kilogram, liveweight in 2023. (Figure 2)
B. Livestock and Poultry (Commercial): Farmgate Prices by commodity

In the commercial industry, the average farmgate price of Hogs upgraded for slaughter was PhP 159.99 per kilogram, liveweight during the year 2023. This was 8.01 percent higher than previous year’s average farmgate price at PhP 148.12 per kilogram, liveweight. Goat for slaughter recorded as the highest average farmgate price at PhP 272.00 per kilogram, liveweight in 2023. This indicates a remarkable increase of 50.46 percent from PhP 180.78 per kilogram, liveweight in 2022. Meanwhile, Cattle for slaughter recorded the lowest average farmgate price in 2023 at PhP 151.79 per kilogram, liveweight, an increase of 4.95 percent from PhP 144.63 per kilogram, liveweight in the previous year. In terms of average farmgate price in poultry sector, Chicken layer (culls) showed a negative growth rate of 16.60 percent, from PhP 136.67 per kilogram, liveweight in 2022 to PhP 113.98 per kilogram, liveweight in 2023. On the other hand, Chicken egg (other breed) experienced a 19.79 percent increase, from PhP 5.60 per piece in 2022 to PhP 6.70 per piece in 2023. (Figure 4)
TECHNICAL NOTES
Livestock – refers to farm animals kept or raised for consumption, work or leisure. In general, poultry is separated as a distinct group of farm animals. For purposes of censuses and surveys, livestock covers only those that are tended and raised by an operator.
Poultry – a collective term for all domesticated avian for the purpose of food consumption or, the carcass of such avian dressed/processed for human consumption. Fowl is a term used to refer to a specific group of avian sharing common anatomical characteristics, e.g., chicken and duck.
Farmgate price – refers to the price received by raisers for their produce at the location of farm. Thus, marketing costs, such as transport and other marketing costs (if any) incurred in selling the produce, are not included in the farmgate prices.
Carabao - is a domestic swamp-type water buffalo native to the Philippines.
Cattle – is a large ruminant animal with horns and cloven hoofs, herbivores, domesticated for meat or milk, or as beasts of burden.
Goat – is a hardy domesticated ruminant animal that has backward curving horns, (in the male) a beard, and, domesticated for milk and meat.
