According to the result of the 2016 Household Survey on Domestic Visitors (2016 HSDV), the provinces of Bohol and Cebu ranked 6th and 7th most visited places by domestic tourists whose main purpose of travel is for pleasure or vacation during the period from April 1, 2016 to September 30, 2016, respectively. Completing the list is the National Capital Region (1st), Negros Occidental (2nd), Pangasinan (3rd), Cavite (4th) and Quezon (5th). The most visited attractions cited in the survey were malls, churches and beaches.
Among the main purpose of travel cited, the intention to travel for pleasure/vacation comprises about 41.6%, seconded by visit friends or relatives at 32.1% and for religion or on a pilgrimage trip at 6.2%. About 65.3% of the travelers who went for pleasure or vacation stayed at home of friends or relatives during their most recent trip, while 9.9% opted to stay in resorts and 9.4% were lodged in hotels.
The long weekend holiday during the Christmas Day accounted for about 47.9% most travelled days in the past twelve months prior to the data collection period, followed by All Saints’ Day at 39.8% and the Holy Week at 27.0%.
The result of the survey also shows that three (3) in every five (5) Pinoys 15 years and over had travelled within the country during the reference period. The survey reports that there were about 42 million Pinoy domestic travelers and each traveler had an average of two trips within the specified period.
The 2016 HSDV is a joint undertaking of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the Department of Tourism (DOT) which aims to gather household data on domestic tourism in the country. It was conducted in November of 2016 with the reference period from April 1 to September 30, 2016.
