PALAY AND CORN SITUATIONER 2020 – 2021
PALAY PRODUCTION
The Province of Siquijor palay production recorded an increase of 69.31 percent in 2021 compared to 2020. The record showed that the production in 2020 was at 1,502 metric tons, while in 2021 marked a big increase of 2,543 metric tons. This palay production increased by 62.38 percent in irrigated farms and 140.60 percent in rainfed farms, respectively. (See Figure 1)
AREA HARVESTED FOR PALAY
The total area harvested for palay in the year 2021 was 609 hectares. This represented an increase of 36.24 percent over 447 hectares recorded in 2020. In the year 2021, the area harvested for irrigated farms increased to 28.79 percent and the area harvested for rainfed farms marked an increase of 94.12 percent. (See Figure 2)
YIELD OF PRODUCTION FOR PALAY
In Figure 3, January to December 2021 yield increased by 24.40 percent from 3.36 metric tons in 2020 to 4.18 metric tons in 2021. Both irrigated and rainfed recorded increases of 26.01 percent and 23.75 percent, respectively.
CORN PRODUCTION
The total corn production showed that year 2021 produced 4777 metric tons and was higher by 54 percent compared to year 2020 with 4027 metric tons with only 46 percent. (See Figure 4)
The highest volume of corn production in the year 2021 was in the 3rd quarter with 3,391 metric tons. The lowest volume of production marked in the 2nd quarter of the year with 160 metric tons. In 2020, the highest production recorded was also in the 3rd quarter with 3,144 metric tons while the lowest production was 9 metric tons in the 2nd quarter, respectively. (See Figure 5)
AREA HARVESTED FOR CORN
Corn area harvested in the province of Siquijor as shown in Figure 6, most high in the 3rd quarter of the year 2021 at 3420 hectares while the lowest area harvested was on the 2nd quarter at 183 hectares. Also for the year 2020 showed most high in the 3rd quarter at 3350 hectares and lowest in the 2nd quarter at 12 hectares.
TECHNICAL NOTES
Palay and corn production, area and yield and other production data are generated from Palay Production Survey (PPS) and Corn Production Survey (CPS) which are among the major agricultural surveys of the Philippine Statistics Authority being conducted every quarter of each year. These aim to generate estimates that serve as inputs for policy making and programs on palay and corn. Production data generated by the PPS/CPS are inputs to the Performance of Agriculture Report (PAR) and to the preparation of the Gross Domestics Product (GDP). Moreover, the surveys support the data needs of planners, policy and decision makers and other stakeholders in the agriculture sector.
Production refers to the quality produced and harvested for a particular crop during the reference period.
Area harvested is the actual area from which harvests are realized.
Yield is an indicator of productivity derived by total production by the area harvested.
Irrigated area with irrigation facilities supplying water through artificial means like gravity, force/power, pump etc.
Rainfed palay grown on this ecosystem has dikes that retain water and is solely dependent upon rainfall for its water supply.
