In line with the celebration of the 28th National Statistics Month, Philippine Statistics Authority- Regional Statistical Services Office 7 conducted a lecture series on Basics Statistics last October 23-27, 2017. A two-hour lecture for three successive days done at the Conference Room. The lecturers are the very own staff of SOCD in the person of Mr. Roxan L. Mujeres (SCO III) and Ms. Erah Mhay Quiñones (Assistant Statistician).
Statistics plays a vital role in every field of human activity. Statistics has important role in determining the existing position of per capita income, unemployment, population growth rate, housing, schooling medical facilities in a country.
The first day focused on the basic statistics that is very useful especially in the proper collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data. Topics include the Definitions of Statistics, Application of Statistics, Sampling Techniques, Levels of Measurement, Types of Data and Types of Presenting Data.
Measures of Central Tendency and Measures of Variability were discussed on the second day. The importance of this topic was to help us find a value for the distribution and this value represents the entire data. It is also use to condense data, make comparisons, and helpful in further statistical analysis.
The third day of the lecture series discussed the Coefficient of Variations and Confidence Interval. A coefficient of variation (CV) is a statistical measure of the dispersion of data points in a data series around the mean.
The coefficient of variation represents the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean, and it is a useful statistic for comparing the degree of variation from one data series to another, even if the means are drastically different from one another. Confidence intervals speaks about risk. They consider the sample size and the potential variation in the population and give us an estimate of the range in which the real answer lies.
The third day of the series also talks about the Hypothesis Testing and PHStat. A hypothesis test evaluates two mutually exclusive statements about a population to determine which statement is best supported by the sample data. PHStat provides a software assist to help create Excel worksheet as solutions to statistical problems. By using this software, the data analysis and calculations was made easy and fast using the software.
This lecture series is designed to widen the knowledge of PSA personnel when it comes to statistics and develop the statistical system especially on the estimation of data to ensure the quality and reliability of our statistical products.
