Place of Usual Residence and Place of Occurrence of the Deceased

At national level, a total of 613,936 registered deaths were reported for the year 2020. Central Visayas contributed to about 8.2 percent of registered deaths in the country. The region ranked fifth in terms of highest number of deaths recorded. (See Figure 1).

 

Central Visayas lodges more than 50 thousand registered deaths for the year 2020

Cebu Province recorded the highest number of registered deaths with 20,107 or 39.8 percent. Second was Bohol with 8,832 or 17.5 percent, followed by Negros Oriental with 8,075 or 16 percent deaths occurrence. Meanwhile, Siquijor had the lowest number of registered deaths with 817 or 1.6 percent only.  On the other hand, for highly urbanized cities, Cebu City had the most number of registered deaths with 7,894 or 15.6 percent, Lapu-Lapu City was second with 2,531 or 5 percent while Mandaue City had 2,221 or 4.4 percent of the total deaths registered. Moreover, combined share of this cities was 25 percent of the total deaths in the region. (See Figure 2)

 

More male registered deaths than female in Region VII

In 2020, there were more male registered deaths with 28,115 or 55.7 percent compared to female deaths with 22,362 or 44.3 percent of the total registered deaths in the region.  It was noticed that highest number of registered deaths recorded between ages 85 and over with 5,719 or 11.32 percent of the total deaths. Higher proportions of female deaths with 3,695 or 16.5 percent were observed in the age group 85 and over.  (See Figure 3.)

 

Most number of deaths in July

In 2020, most deaths occurred in July with 5,036 or 10 percent of the total deaths in the region. It was followed by the months of June with 4,749 or 9.4 percent, September with 4,684 or 9.3 percent, and August with 4,371 or 8.7 percent. Meanwhile the month of November had the least number with 3,320 or 6.6 percent share of the registered deaths. On the other hand, 1,465 deaths occurred in the year 2020 were registered in year 2021. (See Figure 4)

 

Proportion of registered deaths medically attended by province/HUCs

It was noted that 33.6 percent or 16,948 number of registered deaths were unattended in Central Visayas for the year 2020,  while 43.6 percent or 22,012 were attended and 11,517 or 22.8 percent not stated. Furthermore, registered deaths were attended by either hospital authority 10,802 or 21.4 percent, private physician 5,389 or 10.7 percent, public health officer 4,367 or 8.7 percent and others 1,454 or 2.9 percent. (See Figure 5)

 

Most of the  registered deaths were occurred at home

Of the total registered deaths in the region 64 percent or 32,499  took place at home and  35 percent or 17,909 registered deaths took place at health facilities. An indicative also that there were registered deaths occurred anywhere.  (See Figure 6)

 

Technical Notes:

Vital statistics » are derived from information obtained at the time when the occurrences of vital events and their characteristics are inscribed in a civil register. Vital acts and events are the births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages, and all such events that have something to do with an individual's entrance and departure from life together with the changes in civil status that may occur to a person during his lifetime.

Death » refers to the permanent disappearance of all evidence of life at any time after live birth has taken place.

Place of Usual Residence» refers to the place where the person habitually or permanently resides.

Place of Occurrence » refers to the place where the vital event took place.

Explanatory Note:

Data on deaths presented in this release were obtained from the Certificates of Death (Municipal Form No. 103) that were registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars all throughout the country and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority. This release shows an overview of the registered deaths which occurred from January to December 2020, including the 10 leading causes of death. Cumulative figures for 2020 reflect updated data which excludes fetal deaths present in the processing of regular deaths and may differ from preliminary counts previously published.  Fetal deaths as well as deaths of Filipinos that occurred abroad which were reported to the Philippine Foreign Service Posts are presented in a separate report.  Figures shown were not adjusted for under registration.
